Crow Holt

Ancient woodland stretches for acres just outside Retford, offering proper forest walking without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. Crow Holt feels wonderfully untouched - thick canopy overhead, proper muddy paths underfoot, and that earthy smell that makes you want to breathe deeper.

The trees here are the real deal. Oak, ash, and birch create a cathedral-like atmosphere that changes completely with the seasons. Spring brings bluebells in patches, while autumn turns the whole place into a photographer's dream. Kids will love scrambling over fallen logs and hunting for interesting fungi, though keep wellies handy - it gets properly boggy after rain.

Walkers get the most from this place. The paths aren't waymarked like a national park, which means you can actually get lost for an hour or two. Brilliant if you want to escape completely, less brilliant if you're nervous about navigation. Allow a good couple of hours to do it justice.

Location-wise, it's well placed for a holiday around Retford. Little Oak Camping sits just two miles away, while Sundown Adventureland offers a complete change of pace if the kids need more structured entertainment. The forest works particularly well as a morning adventure before heading somewhere with facilities - there's no visitor centre or cafe, just trees and tranquillity.
