Eaton Wood Nature Reserve

Ancient oaks and silver birch create a cathedral of canopy at this woodland reserve just outside Retford. The paths wind through mixed deciduous forest where you'll spot everything from woodpeckers hammering away overhead to the occasional deer picking its way through the undergrowth. It's proper countryside walking without being too strenuous - mostly level ground with the odd gentle slope.

Families with older children will get the most from it, though toddlers might find the longer woodland walks a bit much. The birdsong is excellent here, making it a cracking spot for anyone with binoculars and a bit of patience. Spring brings bluebells carpeting the forest floor, while autumn turns the whole place into a riot of russet and gold.

Allow a good hour or two if you want to explore properly - there are several interconnecting trails that can easily eat up a morning. The reserve feels genuinely wild in places, a lovely contrast to the more manicured parks nearby. Access appears to be free, though parking details aren't clear so it's worth checking locally.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around Retford makes this an easy day trip. Little Oak Camping is closest at just over a mile away, while several others like Greenacres Caravan Park and Wild Acre Village sit within easy driving distance for a peaceful woodland escape.
