Headington Shark

There's a fibreglass shark embedded nose-first through the roof of a Victorian villa on the outskirts of Oxford, and yes, it's exactly as mad as it sounds. Since 1986, this 25-foot creature has been impaled in what's now become one of Britain's most gloriously bizarre artworks - installed without planning permission by artist John Buckley and now very much a protected cultural monument.

You'll find yourself grinning before you've even stepped inside. The sculpture itself is the main event, visible from the street, but the house functions as a small gallery space where you can actually go in and experience the absurdity from multiple angles. It's the sort of thing that works best if you don't overthink it - just enjoy the sheer audacity of someone deciding this was the right way to make a statement about suburban life, mass culture, and the unexpected.

Families with children find it oddly captivating, though be honest - it's a quick visit. Ten minutes tops unless you want to linger and chat with whoever's minding the place. History types and art students seem to get the conceptual side, but anyone who appreciates British eccentricity will simply love it.
