Hazelgill Knott

The walk up Hazelgill Knott is steep enough to make your calves complain but short enough that you won't abandon it halfway. It's a proper little peak just outside Kendal, the sort of fell that doesn't sound impressive until you're standing on top wondering why more people don't know about it.

The summit rewards you with views across the Lake District that punch well above the hill's modest height. On a clear day you can pick out the Scafell range and the valley below is genuinely lovely. The path isn't technical - anyone with reasonable fitness can manage it in under an hour from the bottom - which makes it ideal for walkers who want the fell experience without committing to a six-hour slog.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient. It's the sort of walk you'd do on a good morning before lunch, then explore Kendal's market square in the afternoon. If you're staying at Two Acre Glamping Pods nearby, you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the day ahead of you.

The main thing is timing - go when the weather's decent because the exposed summit offers no shelter. Morning light here is excellent for photography if that's your thing. It's not a "must do" in the grand scheme of Lake District fell-walking, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy something genuinely rewarding without the crowds of the bigger peaks.
