Hay Croft Copse

A small woodland walk near Stockbridge that punches above its weight if you know what you're looking for. Hay Croft Copse is essentially a proper old-growth forest - mixed broadleaf trees, decent ground cover, the sort of place where you half expect to bump into a deer round the next corner. It's not vast, so don't come expecting a half-day expedition, but for an hour's walk it's genuinely pleasant, especially in autumn when the light filters through in that golden way that makes even Hampshire feel a bit mysterious.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The terrain is straightforward enough that families with primary-age kids won't struggle, though very young children might find the path uneven in places. There's something about a proper wood - not a manicured country estate, just actual trees doing their thing - that appeals to people who'd rather walk somewhere with character than follow the obvious tourist trail.

If you're staying at The Meadow Glamping down the road, it's worth the short drive over. Five minutes' planning, decent boots, and you've got yourself a morning sorted without heading into the Stockbridge crowds. No visitor facilities that I could find, so bring your own coffee. Free to access as far as I could establish, though facilities remain a bit of a mystery. The key is catching it on a quieter day - weekday mornings are cracking if you can swing it. Not a destination draw on its own, but genuinely useful for breaking up a Hampshire park holiday with something a bit wilder.
