Hawes Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Rochester, Hawes Wood is one of those places that rewards a bit of effort to find it. Mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually lose the crowds - which is rare round these parts.

The woodland itself isn't massive, but that's rather the point. You're looking at a solid hour or two of walking through established forest, with enough variation in the terrain to keep it interesting. The floor changes between soft needles and proper woodland loam. On a damp day after rain, it's genuinely atmospheric. Bring good boots though - it gets muddy.

For families with older kids, it's brilliant. Under-fives might find an hour enough; teenagers won't get bored if they're the outdoorsy type. It's not a destination on its own - there's no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, no cafe - but as part of a longer Kent ramble it works beautifully. The proximity to Rochester means you can combine it with the castle or a walk along the Medway if you want a proper day out.

If you're staying at Oak View Holiday Park, it's a short drive away. Worth fitting in, especially if the weather's decent and you want an actual woodland experience rather than a manicured country park loop. Free to access, no time restrictions. Go early on weekends if you want solitude.
