Havengore Island

You won't find a gift shop or a café on Havengore Island - that's rather the point. This salt marsh island sits in the Thames estuary east of Burnham-on-Crouch, accessible only by foot across the mudflats when the tide's out. It's a proper wildflower and bird-watching spot, the sort of place where you actually hear yourself think.

The island itself is small and windswept, surrounded by creeks and marsh that look different depending on the light and season. Birdwatchers come here for lapwings and redshank in winter, summer visitors for the relative solitude. The walk out across the mud takes about 20 minutes depending on the tide timetable - and you absolutely must check tide times before you go, or you'll be stranded.

It's not a destination for small children or anyone after a gentle amble. Wear proper boots or wellies; the mud is genuine and can be squelchy. Allow a couple of hours total, and go on a clear day when the landscape actually reveals itself rather than disappearing into Essex drizzle.

Families based at Sea End Country Park or Silver Road Caravan Park nearby will find this works best as a half-day adventure for older kids who can manage muddy ground without complaining. History enthusiasts might appreciate the isolation - this corner of Essex has been quietly important for centuries. For most, it's a worthwhile detour if you're already exploring the Crouch estuary, but don't make it your main event.
