Half Moon Viewpoint

The Half Moon Viewpoint sits just outside Burnham-on-Crouch, offering one of those rare Essex vistas that actually justifies stopping the car. You're looking out across the Crouch estuary - mudflats, marshland, and water that shifts colour depending on the light and tide. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the visit. On a grey one, less so.

It's a quick stop rather than a destination in itself. Ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you're the type to linger with binoculars. Walkers heading along the estuary paths often pass through, and birdwatchers make a beeline for it during migration seasons. The view works best for anyone interested in Essex's maritime heritage or simply wanting a proper look at the river without fighting through Burnham's centre.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - bring your own drink and snacks. The actual viewpoint is modest and free to access, though parking arrangements aren't always obvious. Go early or late to dodge the trickier light.

If you're basing yourself at Sea End Country Park or Riverside Village Holiday Park - both excellent for a coastal break - this makes a logical morning or late-afternoon loop. Silver Road Caravan Park sits nearby too, so you're never far. Pair it with a proper walk along the estuary paths or a lunch in Burnham itself. On its own merits it's a five-minute view, but combined with the wider area it slots in nicely.
