Hatter's Hill

The walk up Hatter's Hill near Ashford rewards you with proper views across the Weald - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant on a clear day. It's a modest peak by any standard, the sort of place locals know well and tourists often miss entirely.

The climb itself takes maybe twenty minutes from the base, depending on your fitness and which route you take. The paths are well-trodden and manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog. Once you're up there, you get the sense of looking out over Kent properly - fields rolling away, the occasional church spire marking a distant village. On a grey day it's forgettable; catch it in good light and it's actually rather nice.

Historians and walkers will get the most from it. There's something quietly satisfying about reaching the summit, even if it's not exactly a mountaineering achievement. The real value here is as part of a longer walk - it shouldn't be a destination in itself, more a waypoint on a day out exploring the surrounding countryside.

Free to visit, obviously. Allow an hour if you're taking photographs or just enjoying the quiet. Go when the weather's decent; there's no shelter up top and rain makes it a rather pointless trudge.
