Hatchet Pond Enclosure

An Iron Age hill fort tucked away in the New Forest near Brockenhurst, Hatchet Pond Enclosure is one of those archaeology spots that rewards a proper walk but won't blow your mind if you're expecting Stonehenge. The site itself consists of earthwork ramparts and ditches - they're visible enough once you know what you're looking at, though the forest has reclaimed much of it over the centuries.

What makes it worth the detour is the walk itself. You're out in genuine woodland, following paths through the New Forest's proper ancient landscape, which feels rather different from the manicured heritage site experience. It's free to visit, as most New Forest archaeological spots are, and you can take as long as you like - though realistically, an hour gives you time to locate the enclosure, have a proper look, and still enjoy the surrounding forest.

This works well for history-minded walkers rather than families with young children expecting dramatic remains. Teenagers who've done Iron Age history at school might find it satisfying to see an actual fort, even if it's mostly earthworks now. The nearby campsites - Roundhill is closest at just over two miles, with Long Meadow and Matley Wood also within striking distance - make it an easy add-on to a New Forest holiday. Spring and autumn are lovely here; summer gets busy with holiday traffic, and winter can be muddy.

Go if you're already exploring the wider forest and fancy some low-key archaeology. Skip it if you need something with visitor facilities or dramatic remains.
