Hatch Pond

The water at Hatch Pond sits dark and still, ringed by mature trees that lean down to meet their own reflections. It's one of those Dorset spots that locals know better than visitors - a proper freshwater lake just outside Wimborne that feels more countryside than seaside, despite being in the holiday park belt.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough, which takes the best part of an hour if you're not rushing. The paths are decent underfoot, though muddy patches appear after rain. Birdwatchers come here regularly - there's usually something worth watching if you've got patience and binoculars. Anglers fish from certain spots, which tells you the water's well-maintained.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're staying at Haven Rockley Park or South Lytchett Manor just down the road and the weather's turned a bit damp. Kids won't be screaming with excitement - there's no playground, no café, no fairground energy. But for a morning walk before breakfast or a quiet late-afternoon stroll to burn off some energy, it does the job. The setting's genuinely lovely without being showy about it.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though parking information isn't clear. Worth ringing ahead if you're making a special trip, but honestly, if you're based at one of the nearby parks, Hatch Pond works as a gentle add-on rather than a reason to pick that area.
