Hastings Country Park

The rolling downs behind Hastings offer proper walking country without needing to trek halfway across England. Hastings Country Park spreads across 350 acres of grassland and woodland just inland from the seafront - close enough to pop in between fish and chips, far enough to feel genuinely rural.

You'll find yourself on open hilltops with views back toward the coast, winding through scrubby woodland where you can actually hear yourself think. The walking is dead straightforward: well-marked trails ranging from casual strolls to proper rambles across the downs. Most people spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed.

Walkers will get the most out of it - the landscape does what it's supposed to do without faffing about. Families with older kids who can manage a decent hill find it rewarding; littler ones might struggle with the distances. It's free to access, which helps when the weather's uncertain and you're not sure if you'll fancy it.

Timing matters. Spring's excellent when the chalk grassland comes alive, but honestly, it works year-round. The paths can get muddy after rain - nothing catastrophic, just wear proper boots.

Stay at Coghurst Hall or Beaulieu Farm if you're based locally, and the park becomes an easy morning or afternoon stop. It sits well with a Hastings seaside break - gives you the coast one day and the hills the next. Don't expect anything fancy. Just good downland walking with actual views.
