Haslemere Recreation Ground

Walk through Haslemere Recreation Ground and you'll find yourself on proper Surrey commons - open heathland with scattered birch and pine that feels a world away from the market towns nearby. It's a genuine working nature reserve, not some manicured park, so expect rough grass, sudden dips into boggy bits, and genuinely decent walking routes that take you through different habitats.

The ground sits just south of Godalming and offers miles of interconnected paths. Bird watchers do well here - you'll spot nuthatches, woodpeckers, and if you're lucky, the occasional hobby falcon overhead. The heathland restoration work is ongoing, which means parts can look a bit rough round the edges, but that's rather the point. This is habitat management, not landscaping.

It's free to access and works best as a half-day outing or a couple of hours if you're base at somewhere like Little Cowdray Farm Glamping just down the road. Dog walkers flock here at weekends - the space genuinely copes with it. Families with restless kids will find enough to explore without needing a specific "attraction" - the terrain itself is the draw.
