The concrete building on Rotherham's edge doesn't announce itself - you could walk straight past if you weren't looking for it. That's rather the point. Harvest is an artist-led gallery space that takes itself seriously without the stuffiness of proper museums, showing contemporary work across painting, sculpture, installation and whatever else the curators reckon is worth your time.

Inside it's intimate and often surprising. The exhibitions rotate, so there's no "greatest hits" you'll definitely see, but that's the appeal - you turn up, you engage with what's actually there rather than ticking off famous pieces. This works brilliantly for people who like art without the tourist crowds, or anyone interested in what's happening in British contemporary practice right now rather than what happened five centuries ago.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're the sort who reads every wall text. Opening hours and admission fees shift with exhibitions, so ring ahead or check their social media before you go - it's worth the five-minute call.

If you're staying at Hooton Lodge Farm nearby, Harvest makes a solid half-morning outing on a day when the weather's mediocre. Combine it with a proper walk around Rotherham town centre, or head out to Rother Valley Country Park if you want to stretch your legs properly afterwards. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth a visit if you're in the area.
