Hartslock

The walk up to Hartslock is steeper than it looks on the map. From Wallingford, it's a decent hike through Oxfordshire countryside, but the payoff is a proper Iron Age hillfort with views that stretch across the Thames Valley on a clear day. You're looking at ancient earthworks - those distinctive parallel ditches and banks that defended the settlement around 500 BC. It's not dramatic like some hillforts; the ramparts aren't towering, but there's something compelling about standing where people stood two and a half thousand years ago, looking down at the same landscape they would have known.

Most visitors are walkers tackling the Oxfordshire Way or local ramblers looking for a half-decent climb with a reward at the top. The site itself is free and unmanaged - no entrance fee, no café, no visitor centre. Allow a couple of hours including the walk from the car park. Winter's actually the best time to visit: the sun's lower, the earth banks cast proper shadows, and fewer people means you get some quiet.

It works well as part of a broader walking holiday around here. Rolling Fields Glamping is only three miles away if you want something comfortable, or Ridgeway View Campsite five miles out if you're after a more traditional setup. Both are solid bases for exploring the area's network of footpaths. Hartslock itself won't keep you for hours - thirty minutes on site if you're thorough - but the walk and the views make it worthwhile on a decent weather day.
