Hart Hill

Standing at 169 metres above sea level, this modest hill delivers views that punch well above its weight. Hart Hill sits bang in the middle of the New Forest, offering a proper vantage point over the heathland that stretches towards Lyndhurst and beyond.

Walkers will find the ascent gentle enough for most fitness levels - it's more of a pleasant ramble than a challenging climb. The summit rewards you with 360-degree views across gorse-covered heath, ancient woodland, and the occasional glimpse of New Forest ponies grazing below. On clear days, you can spot the Isle of Wight shimmering on the horizon.

Families with older children will enjoy this as part of a longer forest walk, though toddlers might find it a bit much. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are wise. Bird watchers often linger here - the elevated position makes it excellent for spotting buzzards and the occasional red kite.

Being in the heart of the National Park means free access year-round, though early morning visits offer the best chance of wildlife spotting and fewer crowds. Allow an hour for the round trip from nearby car parks.

With Ocknell and Longbeech campsites within easy reach, Hart Hill makes a lovely morning expedition before settling into your forest base. It's particularly good value when staying at any of the New Forest campsites - a quick win for that essential countryside fix.
