Harewood

The forest at Harewood sits on the edge of Bridgnorth's sandstone hills, which is where things get interesting. It's not some vast wilderness - think more of a proper working woodland with decent walking trails that actually take you somewhere rather than just looping back on themselves.

What you get here are mixed trees, open glades, and paths that wind through the Shropshire landscape without demanding serious fitness. The sandstone gives the whole place a slightly different character than you'd find in the flatter bits of England. On a decent day the views open up towards the surrounding countryside.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. Families with kids aged seven upwards can manage the main routes without too much complaint. If you're after a two-hour stomp with some actual elevation, you'll be satisfied. Much shorter than that and you'll feel like you've missed the point.

The real value comes as part of a Shropshire break rather than a destination in itself. Wheathill Touring Park is just three miles away, so it works well as a morning or afternoon outing from a longer stay. Combine it with Bridgnorth's sandstone cliffs and the River Severn if you're making a weekend of it.

Bring proper shoes - the woodland floor gets damp and uneven. Best visited spring through autumn. Winter's possible but the paths can be slippery. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared.
