Harecroft Wood

Walk into Harecroft Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old English woodland - the sort with gnarled oaks, dappled light, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the car three miles back in Wallingford. The paths wind through mixed woodland with enough variety to keep things interesting for a good couple of hours, though it's not a vast estate - you can cover the main routes in around ninety minutes if you're not lingering.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Dog owners do well here too, but it's less "destination" and more "excellent stretch of the legs between other things." Kids will enjoy it for an hour or so if they're the exploring type, though there's no playground facilities or anything fancy - just trees, tracks, and the occasional clearing. Families might find it works best as part of a longer day rather than the main event.

The woodland's free to access, which helps, and you can turn up pretty much whenever suits you. Spring's particularly good when the bluebells come through, but honestly it's pleasant enough year-round if the ground isn't waterlogged. It pairs nicely with a stay at Rolling Fields Glamping, just 2.6 miles away, or Ridgeway View Campsite a bit further out - gives you somewhere proper to explore without straying far from base. Wallingford itself is close enough for a pub lunch beforehand, which helps break up the day properly.
