Hare Tor

Getting to Hare Tor means a proper moorland walk from Okehampton, and that's rather the point of it. This isn't a drive-to-the-top job - you're out on Dartmoor proper, hiking across open ground to reach a rocky summit that rewards the effort with genuine 360-degree views across the moor.

The tor itself is modest in height but dramatic in its isolation. Granite outcrops make for decent scrambling on the approach, and the windswept plateau around it feels genuinely remote despite being within reach of Okehampton. On clear days the views stretch far enough to justify the walk. When mist rolls in - which happens regularly - it becomes something else entirely, atmospheric and slightly eerie.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual family afternoon, though fit kids won't struggle with the terrain. The walk takes a good couple of hours depending on your route and fitness, so budget accordingly. Go early if you want any solitude on the moorland.

If you're staying at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, Hare Tor makes a natural half-day excursion into the higher moor. Combine it with Okehampton's town facilities or explore other nearby Dartmoor tors for variety. The moor can be unforgiving in wet weather, so choose your day carefully. Proper boots are non-negotiable.
