Hare Shaw

The walk up Hare Shaw isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the summit. Starting from the Kendal side, the path climbs through woodland before opening out onto moorland with proper views back towards the valley. On a clear day you can see right across Cumbria - the hills roll away in every direction and it's the sort of vista that makes the huffing and puffing worthwhile.

This is walkers' territory, pure and simple. It's not a casual stroll for the kids, and the views from the top won't mesmerise anyone for more than half an hour, but as a mid-length circuit it slots perfectly into a day in the Lakes without eating up a full morning. You're looking at roughly two hours round trip depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

If you're based at Two Acre Glamping Pods nearby, this makes a proper addition to your Kendal-area walking itinerary - close enough that you won't waste time driving, far enough that it feels like a proper outing rather than a park stroll. The moorland terrain can be boggy after rain, so come with decent boots. There's no cafe at the top, so take a flask if you want to sit and admire the view with a hot drink. Worth doing once, especially if you're already in the area tackling bigger fells.
