Hardknott Roman Fort

The road up to Hardknott Roman Fort winds through some genuinely brutal Lakeland scenery - one of England's steepest mountain passes, if you're curious about that sort of thing. Once you've made the drive, you're standing at roughly 800 metres looking down at what remains of a 2nd-century fort built by the Romans to control this corner of the Lake District. It's sparse. Honest work.

What you actually see are the earthwork outlines of the fort's defensive ditches and the stone foundations of various buildings - barracks, commandant's quarters, the works. There's no reconstructed walkway or visitor centre to hold your hand through it. You're reading the landscape itself, which sounds pretentious but genuinely isn't. Stand in what would have been the central courtyard and you understand why the Romans chose this brutal spot: they could see everything coming.

Histories buffs will find this absorbing for a proper hour's exploring. Families with younger kids might manage thirty minutes before the exposure and the wind wear thin. It's free to wander around, though the narrow road and steep approach mean you need to respect the terrain - this isn't a casual stroll.

It sits well within a broader Lake District walking holiday. Fisherground Campsite down in Holmrook is less than five miles away and makes a sensible base for tackling this and the wider Wasdale valleys. Go on a clear day. The views southward are vast, and on grey afternoons the whole thing feels rather bleak. The fort doesn't photograph well from a distance, but standing inside it does something proper to you.
