Hanwell Brook Wetland

The wetland spreads out like a proper nature reserve should - reedy channels, open water, and the kind of birdsong that makes you actually want to switch your phone off. Hanwell Brook Wetland sits just outside Oxford and rewards anyone who takes the short detour from the main tourist trail. You're looking at a working habitat rather than some manicured visitor attraction, which means it shifts with the seasons. Spring brings migrants, autumn's thick with resident birds, and winter can be bleak but brilliant if you catch it right.

It's ideal for birdwatchers who know what they're doing and families with older kids who won't demand a gift shop and ice cream van within twenty minutes. Bring binoculars. Bring a bird identification book if you're new to this. The walk itself is straightforward - no scrambling or technical bits - but it's the sort of place where you move slowly and watch rather than tick off a list.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Anita's is three miles away, Fir Tree less than four - this makes a proper morning or afternoon activity without eating into drive time. The reality is you'll spend two to three hours here if you're genuinely interested, maybe ninety minutes if you're not. Free to access, no facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. Oxford's close enough for dinner afterwards if the wetland's left you wanting civilisation.
