Hanging Plantation

The woods at Hanging Plantation feel properly wild for Somerset - dense, dark in places, with the sort of quiet that makes you forget Yeovil's just down the road. It's ancient woodland, the kind where you half expect to stumble on something medieval tucked between the oaks and beeches.

There are decent walking trails threading through, nothing too strenuous but enough to keep you off the main paths if you want solitude. The floor is soft with leaf litter and moss. In spring the bluebells are genuinely worth timing a visit for - they carpet the forest floor in proper waves of blue. Autumn's excellent too when the canopy turns gold and bronze.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find it a bit much if they're after structured activities or playgrounds - this is about letting them loose in the trees and calling it done. It's free to visit, no fees or gates, which is refreshing. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing a full loop, less if you just want a quick ramble.

If you're camping at Long Hazel Park nearby, this makes a proper alternative to the standard tourist circuit. It's the kind of place that reminds you why you came to Somerset in the first place - not for attractions but for actual landscape you can get inside.
