Handpost Covert

Deep in the Oxfordshire countryside near Burford sits Handpost Covert, a small but proper woodland that rewards quiet exploration. It's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic - mature trees, decent paths winding through, and enough space to lose the feeling of being in the south-east at all.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not massive - you can cover the main routes in an hour or so - but it's ideal if you're after a break from the car during a touring holiday. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, paths are generally well-maintained, and there's a genuine sense of being properly away from it all. Families with younger kids might find an hour is enough before boredom creeps in; older children who actually enjoy a wood will be fine here.

You won't find a visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared. It's free to access, and there's no set "visiting" season - though autumn is particularly good if you want colour without the summer mud. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right.

If you're based at Wysdom Touring Park just down the road, Handpost Covert makes for a straightforward afternoon outing. It slots neatly between the bigger Oxfordshire attractions without demanding much. Not dramatic, not Instagram-worthy, but genuinely pleasant - which is often exactly what you want from a woodland walk.
