Ham Street Woods National Nature Reserve

The moment you step into Ham Street Woods, you're enveloped by proper old-growth woodland - ancient oaks, birches, and sweet chestnuts that have been here for centuries. It's a working nature reserve just outside Ashford, and it genuinely feels like you've slipped away from Kent's commuter belt entirely.

You're here to walk, basically. The woodland is crisscrossed with well-maintained paths, and there's real wildlife: you might spot muntjac deer, squirrels, or if you're lucky, woodpeckers hammering away in the canopy. Spring brings bluebells that genuinely take your breath away - we're talking carpets of them. Autumn's equally good, with fungi and that particular smell of damp leaves that you only get in proper woods.

Families with younger kids will get a solid hour or two out of it before restlessness kicks in. Older walkers and nature enthusiasts will want longer - the reserve sprawls across several hundred acres, so there's plenty to cover without feeling rushed. Free to access and open year-round, which is excellent value.

The real win is how close it sits to the holiday parks around here. Marlie Holiday Park and Cabu by the Sea are both within reach for an afternoon expedition, so you can base yourself nearby and make this your proper woodland walk without the faff of driving miles. Go midweek if you can - weekends get busier, and the woods are far better enjoyed quietly.
