Hamstreet Woods National Nature Reserve

The woods around Hamstreet, just south of Ashford, are proper Kent woodland - the sort of place where you actually see something if you keep quiet and patient. Hamstreet Woods National Nature Reserve is a working landscape, not a manicured visitor attraction, which means it rewards the curious and frustrates the restless in equal measure.

You're here for the wildlife. The reserve protects a decent chunk of ancient woodland and open heathland, the kind of habitat that's vanishingly rare in south-east England. Woodpeckers, nightjars, and a whole cast of invertebrates that nobody but ecologists gets excited about - though that doesn't mean you won't hear them. Spring is electric with birdsong. Summer brings the insects. Autumn and winter can feel oddly peaceful, which is its own reward.

Walking trails crisscross the reserve, though they're not always obvious. Bring a map or use your phone sensibly. There are no facilities to speak of - no café, no gift shop, no interpretation boards doing your thinking for you. Free access, which is the way it should be.

It's brilliant for serious walkers and anyone genuinely interested in woodland ecology. Young children might last twenty minutes before asking why there's nothing to do. If you're staying at Broadhembury Caravan and Camping Park nearby, it's a decent morning sortie before heading to Port Lympne Safari Park for something more obviously entertaining.

Allow two to three hours if you're actually looking at things. Go early, go quietly, go patient.
