Ham Common

A strip of open heathland just outside Poole, Ham Common is the sort of place locals know well and visitors often miss entirely. It's proper Dorset heathland - gorse, bracken, and scattered pines stretching across surprisingly wild terrain for somewhere so close to town. You can walk it in an hour or spend half the day if you're the type who likes to poke around.

The appeal here isn't Instagram-ready vistas or heritage plaques. It's the space itself. On a clear day you get decent views across the heath, and it's genuinely quiet even when Poole's busy. Walkers get the most from it - there are decent paths if you know where to look, and the terrain keeps things interesting without being brutal. Kids can run about, families can stretch their legs between attractions. In spring the gorse blooms yellow and smells wonderful; autumn brings colour to the scattered trees.

It's free to access and there's no formal entry point - you park nearby and head in. Allow a couple of hours to do it properly rather than rush it. The real value comes if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Parkdean Resorts Sandford (less than 3 miles away) or Burnbake Forest Lodges. It's the kind of place that breaks up a holiday nicely without demanding a day of your time. Worth it if you're in the area, but don't plan a trip just for this.
