Halsey Field

The wide open space of Halsey Field sits just outside Hemel Hempstead, a proper chunk of Buckinghamshire countryside that doesn't shout about itself. It's the kind of place locals know about but visitors often miss - a flat, accessible field that works well for a stretch of the legs without demanding much from you.

Walkers and families with younger children get the most from it. There's room to move about, space for a picnic, and it's the sort of location that feels like a genuine break from the built-up bits of town. The field itself is unremarkable in the best possible way - no manicured attractions, no gift shop, just open ground. Worth knowing about if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Fuzzy's Farm, just a mile away, or Highridge Farm's shepherd huts at under two miles.

Access appears to be free and you can visit whenever suits you, though details are thin on the ground. Budget an hour maximum unless you're planning a longer walk through the surrounding area - it's a spot to clear your head rather than an all-day mission. In decent weather it's pleasant enough; in wet conditions it'll be a muddy trudge.

If you're based at any of the camping spots within five miles - Whelpley Hill, Woodlands, or Norcott - Halsey Field works as a quick outing while you're in the area, particularly for breaking up a day with little ones. Don't expect much, and you won't be disappointed.
