Hallinhag Wood

Hallinhag Wood is a proper slice of Lake District woodland sitting just outside Penrith, the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. It's a mixed forest - mostly deciduous with some conifers thrown in - and there are decent walking trails threading through it if you know where to go. The paths are well-trodden but not rammed, and you get that genuine woodland feel: dappled light, moss on the rocks, the occasional surprise clearing.

Walkers will get the most from it. This isn't a destination attraction - you're not travelling an hour to spend half a day here - but if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby (Ullswater Holiday Park is barely two miles away), it's exactly the sort of low-key ramble that fills a morning nicely. Kids who like climbing on fallen trees and spotting birds will enjoy it more than those after obvious attractions. The woodland can get muddy even days after rain, so proper boots make sense.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, and it's free to access. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which paths you take and how often you stop. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, and autumn feels particularly good in there - that golden light through the trees. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people come to Cumbria in the first place, without any of the Lake District's crowds.
