Hallickshole Hill

Getting to the top of Hallickshole Hill rewards you with proper views across the New Forest, though it's not a dramatic scramble - more of a steady pull through woodland that opens up nicely towards the summit. The peak itself is modest by any standard, but that's rather the point. You're looking at maybe forty minutes from the car park if you're not dawdling, less if you're fit.

This is walker territory, full stop. Don't bring the kids expecting a theme park experience - they'll be bored within twenty minutes unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy being outdoors. History buffs will find little to chew on here; it's about the walking and the views, not about what happened centuries ago.

The nearest proper base is Lyndhurst, though several campsites sit within striking distance - Ocknell and Longbeech are both close by, and if you're after something with a touch more comfort, Fernwood Glamping at 4 miles is worth considering. The hill fits neatly into a broader New Forest ramble rather than standing alone as a destination. Combine it with walks around nearby parkland and you've got a decent day sorted.

Free to walk, naturally. No facilities at the summit, so bring water. Best visited in dry weather when the paths aren't churned up. Spring's lovely up here, and autumn even better when the light's golden and you're not melting.
