Hales Hall Pool

Twenty minutes from Stoke-on-Trent, this modest pool sits quietly in rolling Staffordshire countryside, more fishing lake than grand tourist draw. The water stretches for perhaps 200 metres, fringed by reeds and the odd willow, with a proper gravel path running most of the way round.

Anglers dominate the scene here - it's clearly their patch, with permanent pegs dotted along the banks and that unmistakable stillness that comes with serious fishing waters. Families might find it a bit limited unless the kids are genuinely keen on watching floats bob about for an hour or two. Dog walkers get a decent circuit, though it's hardly spectacular.

The real appeal lies in its simplicity. No crowds, no entrance fees as far as I could tell, just a straightforward country pool where you can sit on the bank and watch the world slow right down. Perfect if you're staying at nearby Hales Hall Caravan Park - it's practically on your doorstep.

Best visited early morning when the mist might still be lifting off the water, or late afternoon when the light catches the surface just right. Don't expect pristine facilities or marked trails - this is very much a 'take it as you find it' sort of place. Lovely for what it is, but probably not worth a special journey unless you're already exploring this corner of Staffordshire.
