Hadnall Moat and Ridge and Furrow

The lumpy fields just outside Hadnall, a few miles north of Shrewsbury, don't look like much at first glance. But what you're standing on is a textbook example of medieval land management - the moat earthworks and ridge-and-furrow ploughing patterns that shaped England's countryside for centuries. The moat itself is the most obvious feature, a raised platform surrounded by defensive ditches that would have protected a Norman or medieval manor house. Alongside it, the corrugated landscape of parallel ridges tells you exactly how medieval farmers worked these heavy Shropshire soils, turning them into neat strips that still catch the light in certain ways.

It's not a place for a long visit. Walk around for twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're genuinely interested in how people lived here in the 12th or 13th century. Archaeologists and history students will find it properly interesting - the earthworks are well preserved and the site feels genuine, not reconstructed or over-interpreted. Families with young kids might find it a bit abstract; there's no visitor centre, no displays, just the actual ground beneath your feet.

The site is accessible from near Sunnyside Farm Caravan Park if you're staying locally. Free to visit, naturally, being a working (or at least unmanaged) historical field. Best in spring or autumn when the light picks out the earthworks more clearly. It works well as a ten-minute detour if you're exploring the Shrewsbury area or heading towards the Shropshire countryside proper.
