Haddenham Park

The wetland at Haddenham, just outside Cambridge, is one of those places that rewards you for knowing it exists. Walk the paths through reed beds and you'll spot water voles if you're patient, kingfishers if you're lucky, and plenty of warblers if you time it right for spring migration. It's proper birdwatching territory - the kind of spot where twitchers actually know what they're doing.

There's nothing flashy about it. No visitor centre, no cafe, just the marshland itself doing what it's done for centuries. You can wander for an hour or settle in for three if you're serious about identifying species. Families with young children might find it a bit limited - there's not much to do except watch and listen - but kids who like animals and can handle a bit of bog mud will get something out of it.

The nearest town is Cambridge, which means you're well placed for a broader Cambridgeshire trip. If you're based at Fen End Farm or Chittering Park - both within a few miles - you could easily fit Haddenham in as a morning or evening ramble. It's the sort of place that feels special precisely because it's unprepossessing. No admission fees that I'm aware of, no gift shop, no Instagram moment waiting to happen. Just marshland, birds, and the occasional rustle of something moving through the vegetation. Wear wellies. Check the weather. And bring binoculars.
