Hack Plantation

Hack Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Melksham, the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss. You're walking through mixed forest - nothing fancy, just straightforward English woodland with decent tree coverage and enough paths to keep you wandering for a good hour or two without feeling rushed.

It's ideal if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Piccadilly or the Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site and need to stretch your legs without driving far. The woodland itself is free to access and requires no special planning - turn up, park sensibly, and go. No visitor centre, no admission fee, no faffing about.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable enough for a morning outing. The paths are reasonably well-trodden, though after rain you'll want decent boots. Walkers after something more demanding might find it a bit tame, but it's solid for a gentle ramble with the dog or a quiet hour away from the caravan site.

Wiltshire's got better-known spots - Longleat Forest and Savernake are obvious picks - but if you're staying locally and the weather's decent, Hack Plantation does the job without any pretension. Go early if you value peace and quiet. Late afternoon can get busier with dog walkers heading out after work.
