Gyllyngvase Beach

The sand here stretches for what feels like miles, golden and properly wide even at high tide. Gyllyngvase Beach sits just outside Truro, backed by low cliffs with the kind of gentle slope that means you're not scrambling down a ladder to reach the shore. It's the sort of beach that works year-round - summer fills with families and swimmers, but October through March the place opens up and you can actually walk without threading between windbreaks.

What makes it different from the busy Cornish hotspots is the lack of pretence. There's a café, a car park, basic facilities. Nobody's selling you Instagram content. The water's decent for swimming if you're brave (or if the season suits), and the sand's fine enough that kids will spend hours building things without complaint. Walkers find the coastal path access straightforward - you can leg it along the cliffs towards Falmouth without backtracking.

Give yourself two to three hours minimum, longer if the tide's cooperative and you fancy exploring the rock pools. It's free to access, though parking's a few quid. Go on a weekday in shoulder season and you'll barely see another soul.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Trethem Mill's the closest at 4.4 miles, or Stay Wild if glamping appeals - this works as an easy local break without needing to chase the coastal crowds down to Perranporth or Polzeath. Proper job for a quiet afternoon.
