Gwydir Forest Park

The forest sprawls across the slopes above Betws-y-Coed, all dark conifers and rushing water - proper Snowdonia terrain. Gwydir Forest Park is miles of walking trails threading through commercial woodland that somehow feels wilder than the name suggests. You'll find yourself on bridleways that climb steeply into the trees, past old stone walls and sudden clearings where the Conwy Valley opens up below.

What makes it work is the sheer variety. Some paths are gentle riverside strolls; others push you uphill for proper views across to the Glyderau. The Swallow Falls nearby is the obvious pull for families - water cascading down rocks, easy access, kids can scramble about for twenty minutes before getting bored. But stick with it longer and the forest itself becomes the thing. The air smells right. Light filters through in that particular Welsh way.

It's free to walk, which is refreshing. Allow anything from an hour for a quick loop to a half-day if you're properly exploring. Spring and autumn are best - summer brings midges, winter can be properly muddy. The forest works brilliantly as a break between the glamping sites at Snowdonia Glamping Holidays and Conwy Valley Touring Park. You're only minutes from Betws-y-Coed's cafes and shops, so it's manageable with kids, but substantial enough that serious walkers won't feel short-changed. Parking is scattered at various trailheads; the main car park near Swallow Falls fills up midday in summer.
