GWT Dixton Embankment Reserve

The embankment at Dixton sits quietly along the Wye, a stretch of riverbank that's been left to do what nature does best. It's not a destination that'll have you queuing or checking your watch - more the sort of place you stumble into when you're exploring around Ross-on-Wye and fancy a proper walk rather than another town street.

This is a reserve, which means it's been managed for wildlife, not tourists. You get views across the water, paths through scrubby growth, and if you're keen on birds or just need to clear your head, it does the job without fuss. Spring's best if you want to see things actually happening - flowers coming through, birds nesting, that sort of thing. Summer works fine too if the weather's on your side.

It's free to access, which is decent. Allow a good hour if you're going to walk it properly rather than just pop in and out. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes - there's no playground kit or visitor facilities, just the walk itself.

If you're staying at somewhere like Trippenkennett Farm just down the road, this fits in nicely as a morning ramble before heading into Ross proper. It's the kind of place that doesn't shout about itself, which is rather the point. Not spectacular, but honest work.
