Gwarchodfa Natur Abercorris (Abercorris Nature Reserve)

The walk down to Abercorris Nature Reserve catches you off guard - you're suddenly surrounded by proper old-growth woodland, the kind that makes you forget you're in Wales and feel like you've wandered into somewhere altogether wilder. The reserve sits along the river valley near Dolgellau, and it's the sort of place that rewards curiosity more than it rewards casual strolling.

What you're actually doing here is picking your way through native broadleaf trees, spotting water-loving plants along the riverbank, and if you're lucky and quiet, catching sight of wildlife. Pied flycatchers nest here in spring, and in winter the river itself becomes the main attraction - it's moody and impressive after rain. The paths aren't particularly well-marked, which some will find frustrating and others will find exactly the point.

This is genuinely one for nature enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than families wanting a quick leg-stretch. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're going to explore properly. It's free, which is the only way it should be.

If you're based at Gwerniago Campsite or Torrent Walk - both within easy striking distance - this makes a brilliant half-day venture before heading back for a proper meal. The car park situation is basic but manageable. Go on a weekday morning if you can; you'll have the place to yourself, and that's when the birds are most active.
