Gunpowder Park & Sewardstone Marsh

The Gunpowder Park sits alongside Sewardstone Marsh just east of Waltham Cross, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick dash through. You're walking alongside an old gunpowder mill site - the industrial history is there if you look for it, crumbling structures half-hidden by undergrowth - but mostly it's about the water. The marsh opens up and the River Lee winds through it all, attracting serious birdwatchers and casual spotters alike. Herons are common, and if you time it right you'll see buzzards overhead.

This is genuinely decent territory for families who don't mind a bit of mud. Kids won't get bored if you let them lead - there's always a new pool to investigate or a bird to chase off. Walkers benefit from the flat, easy paths that loop around, and the absence of crowds is refreshing if you've just come from somewhere packed. Spring and autumn are proper magic here, when the migrating birds make the marsh feel alive.

Allow two hours minimum if you want to do the main circuit without rushing. It's free to access - at least it has been historically - and there's parking near the entrance. If you're based at Lee Valley Caravan Park over at Dobbs Weir, this is a five-minute drive and worth the visit between other pursuits. Don't expect facilities or cafes, so bring water and pack a snack. The place works because it doesn't try too hard.
