Gunpowder Hut

Scrambling up the rough coastal path from Seahouses harbour, you'll stumble upon what locals call the Gunpowder Hut - a crumbling stone shelter perched on the clifftops that once stored explosives for the quarry workers below. The structure itself won't win any beauty contests, but that's entirely beside the point.

What matters here is the view. Standing beside this weathered relic, you get an unobstructed panorama across to the Farne Islands that's absolutely cracking. On clear days, you can pick out individual seabirds wheeling around the rocky outcrops, while Bamburgh Castle looms impressively to the north. The wind can be proper fierce up here, so bring a jacket even in summer.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot - it's a natural stopping point on the coastal path between Seahouses and Bamburgh. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of a climb will enjoy it too, though toddlers might find the uneven approach tricky.

The hut sits conveniently close to several holiday parks including Clifftop & Stone Close and Seafield Caravan Park, making it an easy evening walk from your base. Allow twenty minutes each way from Seahouses, and time it for sunset if you can manage it. The light hitting the Farnes is lovely.
