Gullane Hill

The walk up Gullane Hill takes about twenty minutes if you're not dawdling, and the view across the Firth of Forth makes it entirely worth the mild leg-work. You're looking at the Lothian coastline spread out below, and on a clear day the islands come into proper focus - Bass Rock especially, all dramatic and craggy. The summit itself is modest, nothing pretentious, just a grassy knoll with a trig point and enough space to sit with a flask.

It's the kind of walk that suits families who aren't looking for an epic undertaking, and older kids will manage it without complaint. The path is straightforward, not technical, though it can get muddy after rain so decent shoes matter. You're really here for the view and the fresh air rather than any particular feature on the hill itself.

Gullane sits right on East Lothian's coast, so if you're staying at somewhere like Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village just down the road, this makes an excellent morning expedition before the beach claims your afternoon. The village itself is charming enough - good cafés, some proper fish and chips - and you can combine the hill walk with a wander along the golf course paths or the shoreline. Free to access, open year-round. Best visited when the weather's cooperating, obviously. On a grey day it's frankly a bit underwhelming, so time it right and you've got a solid couple of hours sorted.
