Grunta Beach

Rocky outcrops frame this smaller stretch of sand just south of Woolacombe's main beach, creating natural pools that kids absolutely love exploring at low tide. The walk down is a bit of a scramble - proper walking shoes essential - but you're rewarded with fewer crowds than the famous stretch next door.

Surfers rate it highly when the main beach gets too busy, though beginners might find the rocks a touch intimidating. The sand quality is every bit as good as Woolacombe proper, just without the deck chairs and ice cream vans. Perfect if you prefer your beaches on the wilder side.

Timing matters here. High tide swallows much of the beach, so check before you trek down. Low tide reveals the best rock pools and gives you proper space to spread out. The scramble back up with tired children and beach kit isn't trivial - consider it your workout for the day.

Families staying at nearby parks like Woolacombe Bay or Woolacombe Sands will find it well worth the short drive for a change of scene. More adventurous than bucket-and-spade territory, this works brilliantly for older kids who've outgrown sandcastles but still want coastal fun.
