Grundy Park

Just east of Waltham Cross, Grundy Park is a proper slice of Hertfordshire wetland that most people drive straight past without a second glance. It's a nature reserve that rewards a slower approach - the kind of place where you actually notice things rather than tick them off a list.

The park centres around water. There are ponds and marshland where you can spot waterfowl if you're patient and quiet, which rules out school holidays if you're after a peaceful morning. Dragonflies are thick on the ground in summer, and the reed beds attract all manner of birds. Walking the paths isn't strenuous, but it's genuinely pleasant - the sort of gentle ramble that works if you're not feeling the full-on hike energy.

Families with younger children will find it manageable but potentially a bit dull after half an hour unless they're proper nature spotters. Birdwatchers and naturalists, though - this is exactly the kind of local spot that makes a holiday richer. Combine it with the nearby Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site if you're based in a caravan or tent, and you've got a decent outdoor package going.

Free to visit, as far as local nature reserves tend to be. Allow 45 minutes to an hour unless you're genuinely interested in what's flying about. Spring and autumn are best for birdlife. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it'll be time well spent if you're after quiet rather than spectacle.
