Grovelands Park

The moment you step through the gates at Grovelands Park, you're out of London's orbit - though you're barely ten minutes from the capital. This sprawling nature reserve in Hertfordshire feels properly remote, all mature woodland, open meadows, and the occasional surprise of water views that make you forget you're this close to the city.

It's a walker's park, full stop. There are proper trails threading through ancient trees, a lake that draws wildlife photographers, and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by other visitors even on decent weekends. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice - longer if you're the type to sit and watch birds. The woodland is genuinely atmospheric, especially in autumn when the light comes through gold and thin.

Historically minded visitors will find the bones of a Georgian estate here too, though it's the landscape itself that's the main draw rather than grand buildings. Families with younger kids might find it a bit too open and walking-heavy for a quick visit - there's no obvious play facilities or cafe stops that I'm aware of, so pack what you need.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Theobalds Park is less than five miles away - Grovelands works brilliantly as a half-day break from caravan life. It's free to wander, costs nothing to enjoy, and genuinely feels like proper countryside despite the London postcode. That's worth the drive alone.
