Greymore

You'll know Greymore the moment you spot it rising above Banchory - a proper hill rather than a mountain, which actually works in its favour. The walk up takes roughly an hour from the town, gaining maybe 400 metres, so it's manageable without needing fell-running experience. The view from the top sweeps across the Dee Valley and out towards the Grampians, particularly good in clear weather when you can see for miles. On a grey day it's less impressive, which matters because there's not much else up there - no facilities, no shelter, just you and the view.

This one's best for walkers who fancy something short and sharp rather than a proper expedition. History enthusiasts might appreciate the location within Aberdeenshire's rich landscape, but the hill itself doesn't have dramatic ruins or archaeology to explore. Kids will manage the climb easily enough, though younger ones might find the walk back down tedious once the novelty wears off.

Stay at Banchory Lodge Caravan Park or the five-star Silverbank Club Campsite, both within five miles, and you've got a decent base. Greenpark Leisure is slightly closer at four and a half miles. None of these parks are particularly close to other major attractions, so Greymore works best as part of a broader Dee Valley outing - pair it with a walk along the river itself or a visit to nearby villages.

Going in late spring or early autumn gives you the best odds of clear skies. Allow a full morning from your campsite, including the walk and time at the summit. Free to visit, naturally - it's just a hill.
