Tilquhillie Castle

The castle itself is modest - a seventeenth-century tower that rises from the Dee Valley landscape about a mile south of Banchory. You won't find soaring battlements or sweeping grounds; instead, there's something rather honest about Tilquhillie. It's the sort of place that rewards a short detour if you're staying in the area, not a pilgrimage destination on its own.

Access can be tricky. The castle is on private land, and while it's visible from certain angles, getting close enough for proper photographs or exploration isn't always straightforward - it pays to check locally in Banchory before setting out. The tower dates from around 1632 and sits on the River Dee, giving it genuine historical weight despite its compact size. Local history enthusiasts will appreciate the connection to Aberdeenshire's feudal past, though anyone expecting to walk inside should manage expectations.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Silverbank and Banchory Lodge are both top-rated and within walking distance - Tilquhillie makes a reasonable addition to a morning's exploration of the Dee Valley. Combine it with a proper walk along the river itself, which is far more rewarding. The real pleasure here is landscape rather than building. You're looking at gentle Highland terrain, working farmland, and the kind of Scottish countryside that photographs well in autumn light. Worth twenty minutes if you're passing through; not worth a special trip from elsewhere.
