Greyfriars Kirk

The red sandstone church that dominates Dumfries town centre is impossible to miss - all turrets and Victorian confidence, built in 1862 on the site of an earlier Franciscan monastery. Inside, the atmosphere changes entirely. It's quieter than you'd expect, with polished wood pews and stained glass that catches the afternoon light properly. The kirkyard holds Robert Burns' mausoleum, which is why many visitors come. His grave sits in a neoclassical structure that feels rather grand for a poet, though Burns himself would probably have found that amusing.

You won't spend hours here - thirty minutes covers the church interior and churchyard - but it's worth the stop if you're already in Dumfries, which you will be if staying at any of the nearby caravan parks like Newbridge Country Park or Marthrown of Mabie. The Burns connection draws literature types and Scottish heritage enthusiasts, though families won't find it engaging enough as a standalone stop. The kirkyard itself has peaceful corners and some interesting older gravestones if you like wandering among those sorts of things.

Admission appears to be free, though I'd check the website before turning up to confirm current opening hours - Scottish churches can be unpredictable about when they're unlocked. Dumfries itself has enough cafes and shops to make a morning of it, and the river walk is pleasant if you want stretching your legs afterwards. Not a showstopper, but a solid addition to a Lowlands park holiday.
