Grendon Dog Field

The dog field at Grendon, just outside Atherstone, is one of those local spots that doesn't make the guidebooks but absolutely should if you're staying at any of the nearby caravan parks. It's exactly what it says on the tin - a proper field where you can let your dog off the lead without worrying they'll bolt into traffic or annoy someone's prize-winning roses.

There's not much to it, if we're being honest. No facilities, no cafe, no interpretation boards telling you the history of the place. It's just open space, which is precisely why it works. Families with energetic dogs will get a solid hour out of it, watching their pooches burn off steam while you stand about chatting to other dog owners. Kids tend to find it less interesting unless they're accompanying the family pet, but that's fair enough.

From what I can gather, it's free to use - no signs suggesting otherwise, at least. Best time to go is early morning or late afternoon when it's quieter and cooler for the dogs. Peak season brings other walkers and dog owners, which can be either social or chaotic depending on how your animal gets on with others.

If you're based at Atherstone Stables or Lime Tree Caravan Park, Grendon Dog Field is barely a drive away. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a week exploring the quieter corners of Leicestershire, it's well worth knowing about. Pair it with a walk around Atherstone itself and you've got a decent day sorted.
