Gren Tor

The walk up Gren Tor, near Okehampton, rewards you with proper moorland views across Dartmoor. It's a modest peak at around 1,900 feet, but don't let the height fool you - the ascent is steep in places and the exposed moorland whips up wind that can catch you off guard.

You get Bronze Age cairns up here, which older kids and history enthusiasts will find genuinely interesting once they know what they're looking at. The summit itself is rocky and a bit scrambled, nothing technical, but it demands proper boots and care on wet days. Allow two hours return from the car park if you're taking your time with photographs.

This works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon outing from Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, just 2.9 miles away. The walk is free, naturally - it's Dartmoor. But be realistic about conditions. I've been up there on days when the wind was strong enough to make standing still tricky, and visibility dropped to nothing. Spring and autumn offer the best window.

It's not a casual family stroll, but it's not a mountaineer's challenge either. Teenagers who don't mind a bit of graft will prefer this to gentler moorland walks. Families with younger children might find the exposed terrain and loose rocks frustrating. The nearby Wolf Wood Treehouses, 6.2 miles on, makes a good base if you're planning multiple days exploring the moor. Gren Tor itself feels less crowded than some higher Dartmoor peaks, which matters on weekends.
