Greensands

A stretch of riverside walking along the Nith just outside Dumfries, Greensands is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for. The reserve runs along a genuine mix of woodland, grassland, and water's edge - proper habitat for everything from roe deer to osprey if you're lucky enough to catch one.

What you're doing here is walking. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no faffing about. You pull in, pick a route (they're clearly marked), and go. The paths are manageable and well-maintained, threading through river-side woodland that feels a world away from Dumfries town centre, despite being barely ten minutes from it.

Walkers get the most from this. Families with younger kids will manage the easier circuits, though it's not a pushchair-friendly sort of place. Birdwatchers and nature photographers come specifically for the riverside vantage points. You're looking at an hour to two hours depending on which loop you take.

It's free - properly free, no car park charges, no donations asked. Spring and early autumn are your best bets for wildlife spotting, though the autumn colours along the water are something. Winter can be muddy, so proper boots matter.

If you're staying at Dumfries Riverside Holiday Park, you're essentially on the doorstep. Even from the camps further out towards Mabie, it's a quick drive and worth combining with other walks in the area. Not flashy, but genuinely good for a proper ramble.
